“Turned component” covers everything from a 3 mm pin to a 150 mm flange. The right machine depends on the part’s diameter, length, features and how many you need. Here is how the three main options compare.
CNC turning centres
Best for larger diameters, flanges, shafts and parts that need several setups. Flexible, quick to change over, ideal from prototypes to medium batches.
Sliding-head (Swiss-type) machines
The bar moves through a guide bush, so long slender parts stay supported right at the cut. Ideal for small, long, close-tolerance parts – pins, shafts and connectors – typically up to about 25 mm diameter, often complete in one cycle including cross-holes and milling.
Traub automats
Cam-type automats remain very economical for high volumes of simpler small parts such as plugs, bushes and nipples, with short cycle times once set up.
Quick guide
- Large or flanged parts → CNC turning centre
- Long, slender, small-diameter, many features → sliding-head
- Simple small parts in very high volume → Traub automat
